cmit391linux implementation proposal

Sandwich Islands, LLC has a new research and development group called SIDG. All systems in SIDG will run the Linux operating system and will access/share resources across SIDG’s ~500 client operating system desktops/laptops currently running Windows 7 and Windows 8.1. There is a mix of desktop and laptop systems.

Current Desktop/Laptop Configuration for Windows 8.1:

Processor: Intel Core i3 Second Generation

Memory: 8GB RAM

Hard Drive: 350GB

Network Card: 10/100/1000 Mbps

USB Ports: 4 USB 3.0

Monitor: 22-inch LCD

Current Desktop/Laptop Configuration for Windows 7:

Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo

Memory: 2GB RAM

Hard Drive: 80GB

Network Card: 10/100 Mbps

USB Ports: 4 USB 2.0

Monitor: 17-inch LCD

Your Supervisor has tasked you with a proposal to replace all Windows systems with Linux systems. You will implement the Linux variant that in your professional opinion best meets SIDG’s needs.Your final submission should contain at least 5 to 7 pages of text (not counting title page, images, diagrams, tables, or bibliography). It must be double-spaced, have 1-inch margins, and use 12-point Times New Roman or 10-point Arial/Helvetica font. A title page is required.

You must first submit your assignment to the Turnitit.com website, resolve any originality issues (defined as 40% or higher overall and any obvious non-cited sources that appear). Once you’ve deemed all originality issues resolved, submit to your assignment folder within our LEO classroom. Failure to do so may result in point deductions. Follow the TurnItIn instructions provided within the class.

You must address the following in your proposal, and you may make any assumptions which are not explicitly specified (provided you adequately document these assumptions in your proposal):

  • Plan for the migration from Windows to Linux, considering time, cost, and manpower.
  • Determine how the Linux workstations will ‘talk’ to the exiting ActiveDirectory infrastructure. NOTE: SIDG utilizes Windows Server 2016 domain controllers & AD. **These backend services are NOT changing in the upgrade**
  • Research and justify whether existing computer hardware or new hardware will be used
  • Determine the Linux distro/software applications to be used and the installation options
  • Make every effort to present users with a ‘familiar’ desktop environment
  • Document how the systems will receive IP addresses
  • Document how the systems will access name resolution (DNS)
  • Document how users will logon to the ActiveDirectory domain
  • Document how users will access and share files on the network
  • Document how users will print
  • Document how (or if) data will be encrypted (and why)
  • Document how users will access/use the two existing legacy applications that have no corresponding version on Linux
