Assignment Instructions

Step 1: Select a chapter from our text,
An Introduction to Global Studies, that interests you the most. List the full title.

Step 2: After reading the chapter, select one specific topic discussed within it that you think you would be interested in researching and learning more about for the rest of the session. List it here. (Note, this topic should be
much more specific than the general chapter title).

Step 3: Describe your topic and then discuss how it fits into the larger focus of the chapter (e.g., My specific topic, desertification, is a problem that occurs when ______. It relates to the larger focus of chapter 5, the natural environment, because desertification is _____. ). Devote a full paragraph to this section.

Step 4: Describe one thing that you learned about your specific topic from reading our text and one thing about the topic that you would like to learn more about.

Topics for this course must meet the following requirements:

1. They must be mentioned in our text.
2. They must be global in impact/scope.
3. They must be addressable within an IR/global studies framework.
4. They must be researchable. That is, you must be able to find scholarly articles and books in our online library about the topic.
5. They must lend themselves to the formulation of a research question about which reasonable people disagree. In other words, you must be able to develop a research question that does not have a yes/no or fact based answer. So a question like “Is desertification occurring?” would not be an appropriate question since the facts show that the answer is yes. There can be no reasonable disagreement about the fact that is is happening. One might disagree, however, about the best or most reasonable ways to combat this issue. And that is what wer’e looking for, a question that smart people will answer in different ways.

Step 5: Using your book, authoritative websites, and/or resources in our online library, explain how your topic fulfills the 5 topic selection requirements above. Make sure to use and cite outside sources to support your claims (You should use at least 3-5 resources, including our book).

Compose your assignment in a Word doc. Do not copy and paste into the assignment text box.

When quoting or paraphrasing from our text, make sure to cite it using the Turabian reference list style (a parenthetical citation [P], followed by a reference list entry [R] at the end of the document). Remember that both quotations and paraphrases must be cited both in-text using parenthetical citations and in a reference list at the end of the document. Simply listing references at the end of your post is not enough. Each reference should match-up to at least one in-text citation and vice-versa.
