Heart Disease, Stroke, and Diabetes Mellitus Type 2 can all be prevented and managed with activity and exercise. Many middle-aged American’s suffer from diseases that can actually be prevented or avoided by just adding on simple activities and exercises or just by changing some lifestyle choices that encourages them to be more active. “In the United States, the most common type of heart disease is coronary artery disease (CAD), which can lead to heart attack. You can greatly reduce your risk for CAD through lifestyle changes and, in some cases, medication”(Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2018). Stroke effects about 75 million adults in the United States. Obesity is one the leading causes of death secondary to health issues related to obesity in the adult in the US.

As a nurse you must take into consideration where the patient is at in their life. To increase activity for this person it might just mean walking to work instead of driving or walking around the block a couple times before work. Not all patients will be able to exert themselves in high intensity physical activity. However, the research for heart disease, blood pressure and obesity management includes low intensity frequent exercise. As a nurse it is important to realize what the best exercise routine is for this person specifically, something that is doable for this person and does not overwhelm them. For someone who is trying to prevent heart disease and stroke as a nurse they should recommend 150 minutes per week of moderate exercise or 75 minutes a week of vigorous exercise. (American Heart Association, 2018).For instance you can take a walk with friends or family every day after work or walk to the grocery store. For vigorous exercise you can go to the gym and take a kick boxing class or spin class. Physical activity is anything that makes you move your body and burn calories. It is easy to remember 30 minutes a day 5 times a week! Take the bike to the beach, jog to a friend’s house, walk the dog outside. The best thing to remember to tell your patients as a nurse is ANY exercise is better than no exercise at all.
