Individuals do not exist in a vacuum and are part of a system. Knowing this, it is impossible for one family member to engage in a behavior and not affect another individual in his/her family. Identify a problematic behavior that may present in a family and describe how a seemingly problematic behavior becomes a functioning part of a family system, i.e., a child acting-out to distract from parental discord.

Consider a single-parent household where the eldest child is several years older than the younger children. In this family, it is common for the eldest child to help care for the younger children. Choose a stance for or against this type of family hierarchy and argue your stance. How is this beneficial and appropriate, or detrimental and inappropriate? Explain the concerns and risks for the family members.
