Scranton, Roy. “Learning How to Die in the Anthropocene.” New York Times, 10 Nov. 2013.

“Hope in the Age of Climate Consequences” by Kate Davies https://www.tikkun.org/nextgen/hope-in-the-age-of-climate-consequences (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.

Purpose:

To continue the work of perceiving what is at stake in the changing reality of the Anthropocene and what it means for us personally and comprehensively

To come closer to articulating our deep assumptions about these things

To practice integrating the voice of another writer into our own writing with appropriate distinguishing between them

Write a journal-style response on your reactions to these pieces. Feel free to start with some of these questions and then go in your own direction. How did they make you feel? What struck a chord with you? Where do you see yourself in relation to these two perspectives? Is it possible to be both pessimistic and hopeful? What do you see as the deepest challenges regarding life in the Anthropocene, going forward? What would it look like for you personally to learn how to die (or die well) in the Anthropocene? What would it look like as a society to have intrinsic hope as a society in the Anthropocene? What connections do you personally see between the Anthropocene and hope, spirituality, or matters of ultimate concern?

This assignment should be about 1.5-2 pages and contain at least one quotation from one of the day’s readings integrated into one of its paragraphs. Due printed in class and on Canvas.
