Week 2 Mathematics Real Life Problems

Week 2 Mathematics Real Life Problems

For most of us, mathematics is all about solving real life problems, and believe it or not, algebra is a way to simplify that process. When creating a mathematical model to solve a given application, the end result is usually an equation.
Last week, you reviewed some algebraic concepts upon which we build this week. This week you will learn about linear equations and get an introduction to graphing. Be sure to check out the Supplemental Materials link in the left hand navigation menu for additional assistance as needed.
Course Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this week’s lesson, you should be prepared to:
Graph common functions and equations
Solve a wide variety of equations and inequalities
Construct equations of common functions based on given properties
Identify the properties of a variety of functions by their graphs and equations
Weekly Learning Objectives:
In addition to the course objectives above, you will also be able to:
Sketch graphs of equations, particularly linear equations
Identify x- and y- intercepts graphically and algebraically
Write equations of circles, lines, and linear mathematical models
Solve linear equations in one variable
Solve rational equations that lead to linear equations
Use slope to identify parallel and perpendicular lines
