Peer 1 Post/Elitia
Throughout this course, several key concepts significantly impacted my understanding of information and communication technologies (ICT) in advanced nursing practice. One of the most influential concepts was the integration of electronic health records (EHRs), such as Epic Systems, to enhance patient safety, care coordination, and clinical decision-making. Learning about clinical decision support systems (CDSS), barcode medication administration (BCMA), and computerized provider order entry (CPOE) emphasized how technology can reduce medication errors and improve patient outcomes. Additionally, concepts related to telehealth and mobile health applications highlighted the importance of expanding access to care, especially for underserved and vulnerable populations.
As a future Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, I envision using these technologies to improve patient engagement, ensure continuity of care, and support evidence-based decision-making. For example, telehealth platforms will allow me to provide mental health services to patients with limited access to in-person care, while EHR systems will help track patient progress, medication adherence, and treatment outcomes.“A telehealth platform integrated with an interoperable electronic health record (EHR) system can contribute directly toward achieving the often-discussed ‘quadruple aim’ of better health outcomes, improved patient experience, lower costs, and improved clinician experience. This paper develops a telehealth success model and discusses three critical components: health information quality, EHR system quality, and telehealth service quality to ensure effective health care service delivery, reduce professional burnout, and enhance access to care†(Zhang & Saltman, 2021). Furthermore, integrating patient portals can empower individuals to take an active role in managing their mental health.
Course learning activities and assignments have directly supported my development toward Program Outcome 5, which emphasizes advocacy for positive health outcomes through compassionate, evidence-based, and collaborative advanced nursing practice. Engaging in discussion posts, case studies, and technology evaluations strengthened my ability to critically appraise evidence and apply it to clinical scenarios. These activities also emphasized interdisciplinary collaboration, as effective use of ICT requires coordination among healthcare providers, IT professionals, and patients. As a result, I am better prepared to advocate for safe, ethical, and equitable use of healthcare technologies in practice.
One sub-competency from the AACN Essentials that aligns closely with my learning is 8.1h: Evaluate the unintended consequences of information and communication technologies on care processes, communications, and information flow across care settings. Throughout the course, I explored both the benefits and risks of ICT. While technologies like EHRs and CDSS improve efficiency and safety, they can also contribute to unintended consequences such as alert fatigue, workflow disruptions, and potential breaches of patient privacy. For example, excessive clinical alerts may desensitize providers, increasing the risk of overlooking critical warnings. Additionally, reliance on electronic documentation can sometimes reduce direct patient interaction, impacting the therapeutic relationship, especially important in mental health care.
Assignments such as cybersecurity discussions and case analyses enhanced my awareness of these risks and emphasized the importance of implementing safeguards, including staff training, strong data security measures, and thoughtful system design. Moving forward, I plan to advocate for balanced technology use that prioritizes both patient safety and meaningful patient-provider interactions. By evaluating both the benefits and limitations of ICT, I will contribute to improving healthcare delivery systems while maintaining high standards of ethical and patient-centered care.

Application Of Course Knowledge
Looking back at my experience during this course, the idea that impressed me most was the role played by information and communication technologies (ICT) in the field of healthcare. The combination of these technologies has significantly transformed the care of patients, especially in terms of bettering the healthcare outcomes and streamlining communication within care environments (Jayousi et al., 2024). Being a master ’s-prepared nurse, I see myself able to apply such tools to support healthy living to enhance the care delivery process through integration of evidence-based practice. As an illustration, I will use electronic health records and telemedicine to enhance the access of patients to care and increase the effectiveness of the decision-making process.
The course assignments and activities have been instrumental in realizing Program Outcome 5 to the extent that they allowed me to develop a base that would support my advocacy of positive health outcomes through evidence-based and compassionate nursing practice. Having learned the dynamics of ICT, I stand in a better position to work with multidisciplinary teams and apply solutions that will enhance patient care.
AACN Essentials Competency 8.1 Sub-competency 8.1k that I perceived to be addressed in this course is Identifying the effect of information and communication technologies on workflow processes and the outcomes of healthcare. The course assignments have helped me to understand that ICT tools can streamline workflow, minimize error rates, and positively affect patient outcomes through the better use of communication and coordination of care. This knowledge will also help me to provide solutions based on informed decisions and influence patient care positively.
